Microsoft has released cumulative update KB5102947 (Build 28120.2374) for Windows 11 version 26H1, intended for participants of the preview program on the Experimental channel. This build contains a number of new features and changes aimed at improving interaction with mobile devices, expanding remote administration capabilities for corporate users, and updating multimedia system components.
- Mobile device settings. A new page for adding and managing mobile devices has appeared in the Settings app. It is located under Bluetooth & devices > Mobile devices. From here, you can configure functions such as using a smartphone as a connected camera or granting access to files on the device directly from File Explorer.
- Remote recovery management. A new remote recovery management plug-in has been added, expanding the management capabilities of the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) for mobile device management (MDM) solution providers.
- Emoji and GIF panel update. The panel for inserting emoji and GIF images, invoked by the Windows key + period (.) shortcut, now uses GIPHY as the primary GIF content provider. This change is implemented to ensure smoother browsing and sending of GIFs after the discontinuation of the Tenor API.
Currently, the release notes for build 28120.2374 do not contain information about known issues specific to this cumulative update on the Experimental channel. Users are advised to monitor the official Windows Insider program blog for up-to-date information on possible problems as they are identified.
To install update KB5102947, go to Settings > Windows Update and click the Check for updates button. After the package is downloaded and prepared, a computer restart will be required to complete the installation. This build is distributed exclusively among Windows Insider program participants who have selected the Experimental channel.
How the new features work:
Mobile device settings. A new management page for paired smartphones has been introduced in the Settings app, accessible under Bluetooth & devices > Mobile devices. The subsystem leverages the Bluetooth stack and Cross-Device Experience Host to establish a secure communication channel, enabling the phone camera to function as a virtual video capture source via the standard MJPEG protocol. File system access is provided through a virtualized provider in File Explorer, which transparently mounts the remote MTP device at the shell level while synchronizing the index.
Remote recovery management. A new MDM plug-in has been integrated into WinRE, extending the RemoteWipe CSP interface and recovery policies. The component processes incoming command signatures from the management server through a secured HTTPS tunnel, allowing an administrator to initiate an out-of-band system reset or OS reinstallation while retaining a pre-loaded provisioning package. The logic executes within the trusted environment before the main kernel boots, ensuring atomic recovery even if the primary bootloader is compromised.
Emoji and GIF panel update. The GIF content provider in the panel invoked by the Win + . shortcut has been switched from the Tenor API to the GIPHY server infrastructure. The text input host process now routes search queries via WebSocket to the GIPHY REST API, caching previews in the local SQLite database of ShellExperienceHost. This endpoint change is driven by the Tenor API end-of-life cycle and requires a new authentication model: the client signs requests with a unique token embedded in the shell resources manifest, ensuring seamless trend browsing.
