Microsoft has released cumulative update KB5127757 (Build 28120.3181) for Windows 11, version 26H1, for Insiders in the Experimental channel. The update brings a new Windows Search built on WinUI 3 and math formula reading in Narrator. Changes are rolling out to Insiders gradually, so they will not appear for everyone at the same time.
- Windows Search. The rollout of a new search interface built on WinUI 3 is beginning: it is faster, more efficient, and has a simplified design that makes results easier to browse. Actions are now available right in the results: from search you can turn on dark mode or Bluetooth, change screen brightness, mute the device, or arrange windows. Query understanding has been improved, including matching of typos and synonyms. Refinements will continue over the coming weeks. The same search simultaneously arrived in the Experimental channel in build 26340.9616.
- Math formula reading in Narrator. Narrator has learned to read math formulas and navigate through them. Instead of naming each symbol separately, it reads the expression the way it is meant to be understood: for example, the numerator and denominator of a fraction are spoken together. Reading works in supported Microsoft 365 apps, including Word and PowerPoint. No separate download or setup is needed: formula reading works right after the build is installed.
- Formula navigation. A separate navigation mode is provided for going through a formula part by part: it is turned on with the Narrator key + Alt + N, after which you can move through fractions, exponents, and roots with the arrow keys, and exit with the Esc key.
- Language support for formula reading. The feature that appeared in build 26340.9354 has been expanded: six languages are supported: English (US), English (UK), Traditional Chinese, Finnish, German, and Spanish. The language is selected in the math formula reading section of the Narrator settings.
- Formula reading on the web. Formula reading is now also available for web content in Microsoft Edge Stable version 153.0.4234.32 and later and in Chrome Stable version 153.0.8010.18 and later.
- Taskbar. Saving of taskbar settings related to multiple monitors has been improved when screens are connected and disconnected.
Known issues and limitations: the first release of the new search supports only English. After updating to this build, the device must be restarted, otherwise the new search feature flag will not appear.
To install the update, go to Settings > Windows Update and click Check for updates. A restart of the computer will be required to complete the installation. Narrator is turned on with Windows + Ctrl + Enter, and the speech style and navigation behavior are configured in the math formula reading section of the Narrator settings.
