KB5101680

Microsoft has released cumulative update KB5101680 (Build 28120.2630) for Windows 11 version 26H1, intended for Insiders on the Experimental channel. The build contains a small set of general improvements and fixes that enhance the overall quality of the system, as well as several new features that are rolling out gradually.

The build includes important fixes. An issue with automatic File History backup to network folders over the SMB protocol has been resolved, which was failing due to an erroneous invalid credentials message during connection. In File Explorer, a bug was fixed where files on a mapped DFS drive could be incorrectly treated as originating from the internet if the device booted without a network and later connected to one — this caused a warning stating File that you are trying to view could harm your computer to appear in the preview pane and an unexpected Mark of the Web tag to be assigned to copied files. A problem with persistent mouse cursor flickering reported by some Insiders after recent builds has been resolved, and the preservation of voice input settings, including automatic punctuation and the launch panel, has been improved.

Known issues:

The build also contains an updated pre-release signing certificate. Such certificates are updated periodically to ensure that Insider devices remain on supported builds and continue to receive future Insider Preview updates. The current certificate expires on August 11, 2026 — it is necessary to update to this or a later build with the renewed certificate before that date.

To install the update, go to Settings > Windows Update and click Check for updates. A system reboot will be required to complete the installation.

Feature / Change Performance Increase or Decrease Optimization PC Speed Gaming Optimization
Unified update installation mechanism (driver, .NET, firmware) 🟢 Slight increase (~5–10% less background I/O during updates) 🟢 High — single reboot per month reduces workflow interruption 🟢 Noticeably faster monthly maintenance cycle 🟡 Low indirect impact — fewer forced restarts during game sessions
Adaptive hibernation mode (charge-based threshold tuning) 🟢 Moderate increase — more frequent instant wake above 80% battery 🟢 High — refined modern standby policy saves power at low charge 🟢 Faster resume from idle when battery is healthy 🟡 Medium — better power efficiency during gaming on battery
New touchpad gestures (scrolling speed, accelerated scrolling) ⚪ No measurable impact on compute performance 🟢 Medium — quicker document navigation reduces perceived latency 🟢 Faster navigation through long content ⚪ Not applicable (input method only, no frame-rate or GPU effect)

Find and Change Settings

Setting Where to find How to change
Unified Update Installation Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options Driver, .NET, and firmware updates are now installed together with the monthly quality update, requiring only one reboot per month. This behavior is automatic. To extend the pause of updates, go to Settings > Windows Update, click the "Pause for 1 week" button repeatedly to extend the pause as many times as needed.
Adaptive Hibernation Settings > System > Power & battery This feature is enabled automatically. The system hibernates less often when battery is above 80% and transitions to hibernation earlier when below 10%. To adjust related power settings, go to Settings > System > Power & battery and configure screen and sleep timeouts under the "Power" section.
New Touchpad Gestures Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Touchpad Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Touchpad. Under "Scroll & zoom," adjust the "Scrolling speed" and "Zoom speed" sliders. To enable or disable accelerated scrolling, check or uncheck the "Accelerated scrolling" option, which increases speed when a gesture is repeated for navigating long documents.
