Microsoft has released cumulative update KB5095128 (Build 28020.2380) for Windows 11 version 26H1, intended for participants in the Windows Insider Program on the Beta channel. This patch includes a small set of general improvements and fixes aimed at enhancing the overall quality and stability of the operating system.
- Free upgrade to Windows 11 Pro for Education. Insiders in K-12 educational environments can now perform a simple transition from Windows 11 Home to Windows 11 Pro for Education at no additional cost. This allows educational institutions to purchase devices with the Home edition, upgrade them, and bring them under centralized management. To initiate the process, you must sign in with a local account, run Clipupgrade.exe as an administrator, and then authenticate using a K-12 organization account. The upgrade is one-way; reverting to Windows 11 Home without a clean reinstallation of the system is not supported. Feedback can be submitted in the Feedback Hub (WIN + F) under Install and Update > Windows Installation.
- Fix for File Explorer. Resolved an issue where the OneDrive shortcut in File Explorer would stop functioning when File Explorer was launched with administrator privileges.
- Fix for Outlook. Addressed a problem where the Outlook application could become unresponsive to the close window button.
To install update KB5095128, go to Settings > Windows Update and click the Check for updates button. A system reboot is required to complete the installation procedure. As this build is intended for Insiders, the update is only available on the Beta channel.
It should be noted that the education edition upgrade feature is exclusively relevant for K-12 institutions and requires verification of eligibility through a work account.
How the new features work:
Free upgrade to Windows 11 Pro for Education. The targeted edition transition mechanism leverages the built-in Clipupgrade.exe utility, which bypasses traditional MAK or KMS key licensing by applying an edition upgrade package upon successful authentication via the organization's cloud service. After verifying the account's belonging to a K-12 educational tenant, the system switches the EditionID registry branch and installs the corresponding management components, including support for Azure AD Join and MDM policies, without OS reinstallation and with a one-time digital license change that does not support reverse migration.
Fix for File Explorer. The issue involved the disruption of the OneDrive shell extension when privileges were escalated: when the explorer.exe process launched with an administrator access token, the sync namespace integration lost connection to the OneDrive client background service running in the standard user context. The fix modifies the initialization logic of the OneDrive folder COM object, ensuring correct reconnection to the inter-process communication channel and restoring navigation pane command handling regardless of the process integrity level.
Fix for Outlook. A message queue blockage in the window procedure was resolved, where clicking the close window button sent WM_CLOSE, but the main UI thread entered a race condition due to an unfinished MAPI session background synchronization operation or a critical section held by the calendar component. The patch adjusts the shutdown strategy: upon receiving the close signal, pending RPC calls to the mail provider are forcibly reset and the event processing loop is properly destroyed, restoring interface responsiveness.
