Microsoft has released cumulative update KB5095058 (Build 26300.8697) for Windows 11, version 26H2 for insiders on the Experimental channel.
Features and capabilities included in these builds may never make it to the final release — Microsoft is trying out different concepts and collecting feedback. Features may change, be removed, or replaced and may not go beyond the Windows Insider program. Some of them may appear in future versions of Windows when they are fully ready.
- File Explorer. Improved visual consistency and reliability of the copy dialog in dark theme, including its opening and expanded view with a progress indicator.
- Start menu. Improved reliability of displaying newly installed or removed applications in the Start menu without the need to log out or restart.
- Taskbar. Fixed an issue for insiders using the new smaller Taskbar variant, where the system tray could be cut off or go off screen.
- Settings. Improved reliability of the Settings > Apps > Startup section.
- Virtualization. Fixed an issue where after installing the latest builds on some devices, system crashes could occur with errors HYPERVISOR_ERROR (0x20001) and KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED (0x1E) – during system reboots, virtual machine operations, or while running certain games.
Installation via Windows Update: Go to Settings > Windows Update and click Check for updates. A system restart is required to complete the installation.
| Feature / Change | Performance Increase or Decrease | Optimization | PC Speed | Gaming Optimization |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| File Explorer: Dark theme copy dialog consistency and reliability | ⚪ No direct impact on performance | 🟢 Minor UI rendering optimization (smoother dialog expansion) | ⚪ No measurable speed change | ⚪ Not applicable |
| Start menu: Reliability of app list updates (no logout required) | ⚪ No direct impact on performance | 🟡 Moderate (reduces unnecessary background sync waits) | 🟡 Minor improvement (faster perceived responsiveness after install/uninstall) | ⚪ Not applicable |
| Taskbar: Fix for system tray cutoff on smaller variant | ⚪ No impact on performance | ⚪ No impact | ⚪ No speed change | ⚪ Not applicable |
| Settings: Startup section reliability | ⚪ No direct impact on performance | 🟡 Moderate (accurate startup app management can reduce boot resource usage) | 🟡 Minor improvement (fewer unwanted startup processes over time) | ⚪ Not applicable |
| Virtualization: Fix for HYPERVISOR_ERROR and KMODE_EXCEPTION crashes | 🟢 High stability improvement | 🟢 Critical (prevents system crashes during VM operations and reboots) | 🟢 High (eliminates crash-related downtime) | 🟢 High (resolves crashes when running certain games using virtualization features) |
Find and Change Settings
| Setting | Where to find | How to change |
|---|---|---|
| File Explorer Copy Dialog Dark Theme | Settings > Personalization > Colors | To improve the copy dialog appearance in dark theme, open Settings > Personalization > Colors and set Choose your mode to Dark. The copy dialog will now open with enhanced visual consistency and a reliable progress indicator in its expanded view. To revert to light mode, select Light from the same dropdown. |
| Start Menu App Visibility | Settings > Personalization > Start | Newly installed or removed applications now appear reliably in the Start menu without a logout or restart. To view all apps, open Start and select All apps. To adjust which folders appear, go to Settings > Personalization > Start and choose Folders to customize visible shortcuts. |
| Taskbar System Tray | Settings > Personalization > Taskbar | On the smaller Taskbar variant, the system tray no longer gets cut off. To change Taskbar size, open Settings > Personalization > Taskbar and toggle Smaller taskbar buttons on or off under Taskbar behaviors. The system tray will now remain fully visible on screen. |
| Virtualization HYPERVISOR_ERROR Fix | Settings > System > Recovery | System crashes with HYPERVISOR_ERROR (0x20001) or KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED (0x1E) are now resolved. To apply the fix, install the latest build via Settings > Windows Update. To enable or disable virtualization features, go to Settings > System > Recovery and select Restart now under Advanced startup to access UEFI firmware settings. |
