Microsoft released cumulative update KB5089556 (Build 28020.2149) for Windows 11, version 26H1 for insiders on the Canary channel. This update includes a number of improvements and changes aimed at increasing system stability, storage usability, and font rendering quality.
- Improvement of explorer.exe reliability. Improved reliability of explorer.exe when closing the input switcher and when switching between multiple virtual desktops.
- Specify Dev Drive size and volumes in gigabytes. When creating a Dev Drive in the dialog box, you can now specify the size in gigabytes, not just in megabytes. The same applies to resizing volumes in Settings > System > Storage.
- Improvements to Times New Roman font rendering. Improvements have been made to the Times New Roman font family for rendering combined diacritical marks in Greek and Cyrillic alphabets. Issues with character positioning have been fixed – text is rendered more accurately and uniformly, improving readability, eliminating rendering inconsistencies, and enhancing support for users working with Greek and Cyrillic text.
Known issues: PC reset. The PC reset process using the Reset this PC feature may freeze. To complete the reset, select Cloud download (Cloud PBR) instead of local reinstallation. This issue has been fixed.
Installation via Windows Update. Go to Settings > Windows Update and click Check for updates. A computer restart is required to complete the installation.
How the new features work:
Reliability improvement of explorer.exe: Enhanced stability of File Explorer when closing the input switcher (e.g., language bar) and when switching between multiple virtual desktops. This reduces the likelihood of hangs or crashes of the explorer.exe process in scenarios involving active context switching.
Specifying Dev Drive size and volumes in gigabytes: When creating a Dev Drive in the dialog box, you can now specify the size in gigabytes instead of only megabytes. The same applies when resizing volumes in Settings > System > Storage. This simplifies working with large drives by eliminating manual conversion from megabytes to gigabytes.
Times New Roman font rendering improvements: Improvements have been made to the Times New Roman font family for rendering combined diacritical marks in Greek and Cyrillic alphabets. Character positioning issues have been fixed — text renders more accurately and uniformly, improving readability, eliminating rendering artifacts for users working with Greek and Cyrillic text.
