Microsoft has released cumulative update KB5089507 (Build 26220.8474) for Windows 11, version 25H2 for insiders on the Beta channel.
Features and capabilities included in these builds may never ship in the final release – Microsoft is trying out different concepts and gathering feedback. Features may change, be removed, or replaced and may not ship beyond the Windows Insider Program. Some of them may appear in future versions of Windows when they are fully ready.
- Moving between Windows Insider channels. Beta channel users have begun transitioning to the new Beta channel in accordance with the previously announced Windows Insider transition plan to Experimental and Beta.
- Fluid Dictation in voice access and voice typing. The Fluid Dictation feature is now available to insiders in Spanish and French. It makes voice input smoother and more intelligent – automatically correcting grammar, punctuation, and removing filler words in real time, reducing the need for manual editing. The technology runs on local small language models (SLM) – processing remains fast and private. You can try Fluid Dictation in Windows Voice Access and voice typing (Win + H).
- File Explorer. Fixed an issue from the previous build where the Properties item incorrectly worked for the Recycle Bin and in a number of other scenarios.
- Other. Improved the reliability of Simple Service Discovery Protocol (SSDP) notifications – this reduces the likelihood of the service hanging. Also improved the reliability of executing the dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth command.
Known issues: The PC reset process when using the Reset this PC feature may hang. To complete the reset, choose Cloud download (Cloud PBR) instead of local reinstall.
Installation: Go to Settings > Windows Update and click Check for updates. A computer restart is required to complete the installation.
How the new features work:
Moving between Windows Insider channels.: The channel switching mechanism modifies registry parameters and the servicing branch identifier in the system's telemetry. When transitioning from Beta to the new channel, the Windows Update client service alters the endpoints for connecting to build distribution servers, leading to the download of a different set of feature packages and fixes corresponding to the Experimental or Beta readiness level, without requiring a clean installation.
Fluid Dictation in voice access and voice typing.: The technology relies on a small language model running locally on the CPU and GPU via the Windows ML API. The incoming audio stream from the microphone is converted into text by the speech recognition engine, after which the SLM performs real-time post-processing: it corrects grammatical structures, places punctuation marks based on the utterance context, and filters out filler words, returning the cleaned-up result to the input field.
File Explorer.: The issue was related to incorrect processing of the context menu COM object for system shell folders, where the IContextMenu::QueryContextMenu method for the "Recycle Bin" item passed an invalid pointer to the IShellFolder interface. The build fixes the logic for calling the properties dialog: the object is now identified by its CLSID, which eliminates erroneous command redirection and ensures the correct file operation handler is invoked.
Other.: The stability of the SSDP discovery service has been enhanced by optimizing the UDP packet processing loop in the ssdpsrv.dll driver. A race condition that could lead to a thread hang when receiving a large number of malformed NOTIFY requests has been eliminated. Furthermore, the fault tolerance of the dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth command has been improved—a timeout during the mounting of the temporary component registry hive has been fixed, preventing the interruption of the WinSxS component store repair session.
