Microsoft has released cumulative update KB5083809 (Build 28020.1921) for Windows 11, version 26H1 for insiders on the Canary channel. Windows 11 Insider Preview build 28020.1921 is a build that belongs to the br_release development branch and is available to Windows Insider program participants on the Canary Channel.
The Experimental channel includes the latest Windows 11 preview builds with new features. Builds may have low stability and some issues, but they are intended for experienced users who want to try out new operating system features.
- Moving insiders to the new channel. Microsoft begins moving users from the Canary channel series 28000 to the new Experimental channel (26H1). Please note: release notes apply to Canary channel participants in the 28000 series. With the start of the transition to the updated Windows Insider program, all release notes for new builds will be published under the new channel names, although insiders on the Canary channel series 28000 may not yet be moved to the Experimental channel (26H1).
- Task Manager — NPU tracking. On PCs with an NPU, you can now track neural processor usage in more depth. New additional NPU and NPU Engine columns are available on the Processes, Users, and Details tabs. The Details tab also adds NPU Dedicated Memory and NPU Shared Memory columns, showing how workloads use neural processor resources. Additionally, if the GPU includes neural engines, they now appear on the Performance tab — providing a more complete picture of AI-related system activity.
- Task Manager — Isolation column. A new additional Isolation column has been added on the Processes and Details tabs. It shows which applications are running in AppContainer mode.
- Task Manager — CPU frequency fix. Fixed an issue with CPU frequency display on the Performance tab of Task Manager for virtual machines after exiting hibernation. Values no longer appear unexpectedly high and unrealistic.
- Adding columns in Task Manager. When the changes become available, any of the new columns can be added by right-clicking on the column header in Task Manager and selecting the desired item from the menu.
- Feedback Hub update — version 2.2604.301.0. Microsoft thanks Windows Insider program participants for their feedback on Feedback Hub operation and is rolling out an update. Overall reliability has been improved, and general design, accessibility, and localization have been refined.
- Feedback Hub — translation and language switching. In non-English versions, the Community Feedback section now allows switching to English. Collection titles and official responses are automatically translated into major languages.
- Feedback Hub — file limit increase. The file upload size limit when submitting feedback has been increased again to 500 MB. The accuracy of vote and comment counts on feedback has also been improved.
The update is installed via Windows Update: go to Settings > Windows Update and click Check for updates. A computer restart is required to complete the installation.
How the new features work:
Moving insiders to the new channel. Microsoft gradually moves Canary participants (series 28000) to the new Experimental channel (26H1) via a background update service. The switch happens without OS reinstallation — only the target branch in Windows Insider configuration changes. This allows testing raw features separately from Canary.
Task Manager — NPU tracking. Task Manager now queries the neural processor driver via WMI API and Microsoft Compute Driver Model (MCDM). Added NPU usage, memory (Dedicated/Shared), and engine counters. For GPUs with neural blocks, data is read via DXCore. Updates occur in real time via ETW events.
Task Manager — Isolation column. The new column reads the process security attribute — the SECURITY_APP_CONTAINER flag. Shows whether an application runs in an isolated AppContainer (UWP, some browsers). Helps administrators distinguish full processes from low-privileged isolated ones.
Task Manager — CPU frequency fix. Fixed polling logic for CPU frequency via ACPI and HAL for virtual machines. After hibernation, the frequency value was taken from an incorrect TSC register. Now forces reinitialization of performance counters.
Adding columns in Task Manager. New columns integrate into the dynamic SysListView32 model. Right-click header invokes a menu via IColumnManager interface. Layout saved to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\TaskManager and persists across sessions.
Feedback Hub update — version 2.2604.301.0. The update replaces client DLLs and XblAuthManager. Added retry queue in %localappdata%\Packages. Fixed memory leaks in WebView2 hosting.
Feedback Hub — translation and language switching. Uses ms-resource and Windows.Globalization API. Cloud-based Microsoft Translator for official replies. Requests with Accept-Language header.
Feedback Hub — file limit increase. 500 MB via chunked upload to Azure Blob Storage (250 MB per chunk). Vote/comment counts now use server-side stored procedures.
